Let’s start at the very beginning…

Well it’s the start of a new year, so I thought I’d blog about a beautiful newborn shoot I did with little Rowan.

At just seven days old, this is the best time to capture these first precious moments. Just look at those little toes and fingers, the perfect pout, all bundled up and sleepy.

A newborn shoot has to be when the baby is between 4-10 days old (max 14 days) as this is when they are still very sleepy and therefore makes the shoot a lot easier in terms of posing. When babies are a few weeks old they tend to be more awake and have uncurled bit more, so very difficult to pose if you want the curled up look. This is why I recommend next shoots around four months old when they have a bit more character and can lift their head up.

A newborn shoot can last anywhere between 2-4 hours, just depending on how the baby is that day.  This gives plenty of time for nappy changes, feeding and, of course, lots of cuddles – it’s hard work being a model! Rowan was actually quite awake when we first started, but he soon nodded off after a feed with mummy, and listening to my white noise app. Plus the temperature in the room was nice and warm.

I always, ALWAYS make sure a baby is safe and cosy when doing a newborn shoot, so I come to your home (who wants to trek out when you’ve given birth four days ago!) and set up a posing bean bag with lots of blankets, for different backdrops, and a heater to keep the room nice warm as the baby tends to be nude during the shoot. For some of the poses I will get mummy or daddy to help out holding your little one in place (then I photoshop out hands). Emily, Rowan’s mummy was a star in his shoot and helped keep him in position so he didn’t roll anywhere. I also bring little outfits, hats, headbands and wraps to the shoot so you can choose how you want your newborn to look. I’m happy to shoot in any special outfit you have picked out for them too.

I love doing newborn shoots and feel so privileged that new parents let me into their homes to take photos of their little one at such a precious time, so thank you.

Please do take a look at the newborn shoot I captured below.  If you, or you know anyone who is pregnant and would be interested in a new born shoot, I would love it if you could share this post. My email is info@suzieyorkphotography.co.uk if you wish to contact me to find out more.

With love
